What is mental health?

Your mental wellbeing is the unique way that you handle your emotions, respond to stress, behave and interact with others and also your general outlook on life. Having a healthy sense of mental wellbeing has many benefits. It lifts your mood, promotes resilience in difficult situations and helps you get the most out of life.

How to know if what you are experiencing is a problem?

If you are experiencing difficult feelings, behaviours, or just ‘things’ that you just can’t seem to shake.

If your sleep is consistently poor and you’re regularly tired or lacking energy. If your appetite has changed. If you feel anxious or you can’t turn off those negative thoughts that seem to get more persistent and louder by the day.

Or, most important of all, if how you have been feeling or behaving has been out of character and you are acting differently to how you normally act.

If you experience any of these, but in particular a marked change in how you usually feel and/or behave for an extended period (2-4 weeks), and if this is impacting your relationships and ability to do the things you usually enjoy, or impacting on your ability to do the things you need to do, or even just turning up to work, then it is highly recommended that you seek professional mental health support (LIVIN).

What is good mental health?

Good mental health is more than just the abscence of mental illness. It means you are in a state of wellbeing where you feel good and funtion well in the world. According to the World Health Organisation, good mental health is when you can:

Cope with the normal stresses of life

Work productively

Realise your potential

Contribute to the community

If you have good mental health, you might have emotions including happiness, love, joy and compassion, and you feel generally satisfied with life. You are also likely to feel that you belong to a community and are making a contribution to society. You might also have a sense of spiritual wellbeing, a sense of meaning or purpose, and feelings of peace.
